Mike, one of the by-far silliest songs ever written. When it came out it made my blood boil, and it still does. Why fictionalize and glorify the deaths of young men and then pretend they want their children to face the same fate? Only someone who never saw the "fearless men" die could write such a foolish song. I can assure you that when men are gasping and moaning out their last thoughts they aren't thinking "Put silver wings on my son's chest." If anything they're thinking "keep my son away from this madness."

It's all part of the big fiction of brave heroes who selflessly sacrifice their lives for others. The reality is that, with the exception of a few unbalanced, gung-ho, "kill, kill, kill" terrified over reactors, it's just scared men doing the best they can to stay alive and keep their buddies alive, hoping it's for a good cause and praying that no one has to do it again.

But maybe Unclewest could put this to rest. He was one of the Special Forces. It would be interesting to know if he had the attitude the writer of that song attributed to them. Ed
