I think we can still hope that the Iraqis somehow manage to put this behind them- but the Shiites MUST be looking forward to settling old scores, as well as new scores, now that their holy places are being targeted by Sunnis. The Sunni must know that the Shiites will not hold back on retaliation forever, but are only waiting until the elections can take place, and the Shiites can take over power "legitimately"- at which point I think Shiite restraint will disappear. If the US has to use force against Shiites to restrain them, AND against Sunnis for continuing insurgency actions, I think the future of the whole thing will be very bleak.
