Perhaps you and your friends could volunteer? I think we need some more help over there! At least, I cannot think of any other purpose the column has, except to point out that the press craves sensationalism. The fact is that we had Saddam Hussein contained in Iraq. He did not have any WMD, either. What he did have was a very tight hold on all of the various factions in a country that was constructed with artificial borders in the first place, and which stretches across several huge warring factions that never should have had to share a government. A proper role for the United States might have been to wait until Saddam died and then go in with all our allies and the U.N. As it is, in the eyes of Iraqis we have ourselves become Saddam-like with our brutality. It is not the proper role of the United States government to violently invade other countries that have not attacked us and topple their governments and kill thousands of innocent civilians. Oh, and imprison and torture a lot of people, quite a few of whom did nothing wrong and were turned in by people who just didn't like them. We know nothing about the lay of the land or the people or the culture of Iraq. Our occupation has shown them the worst side of America and Americans. It is really unfortunate that terrorists from the entire region have taken advantage of the power vacuum and the opportunity to kill American troops and contractors, but Bush invited them all to come there, and, more importantly, they only came in reaction to our invasion. So there are a lot of Jihadists there now, who do not really treat women equally. So? There are a lot of horrible, hideous dictatorships all over the globe. We cannot fix them by invading all of them, and intervening just makes America even more hated in the world.
