Standard procedure to keep the number down. Keep payments to retired vets and SS and other social service recipients down. JP you need to take remedial math if you think these CPI numbers are kosher.

May even be underweighted for technology related items,
which continue to plummet in price and make up more of our lives.
Also, housing component varies widely across $US so
coming up with one number is difficult/impossible.
Items are under/overstated and misweighted, so I suspect
it is wrong, but do not know if it is too high or too low.
Most of us go by personal anecdotal evidence.
