A rapid test for H5N1 might come in handy in Vietnam. There are reports of fresh outbreaks in poultry including deaths in Hau Giang Province, location of probable human to human transmission in August

Ron, Things are starting to heat up on the avian flu front. H5N2 has now been reported in at least one duck on at least one South Korean farm. Even if it is H5N2, having H5 infections in the same vicinity of H1N1 and H9N2 isolates with human 1933 flu sequences is not a good combination

WHO and CDC are again talking about a lab test of coinfecting cells with human and avian flu viruses to see what happens. However, their experiment has already been done in Korea

They just need to look at the sequences in GenBank to get the answer.

Now ProMed thinks that if CDC and WHO blow their co-infection experiments, H5N1 will get discouraged and not emerge as a pandemic strain

The CDC in Tawain has put out warnings on avian flu. They are on heightened alert to look for H5 and H7 cases, but nothing on H1 (WSN/33)

Looks like WHO still not taking swine infections in Korea seriously.
