I once went canoeing with a Tippet-like friend. He was up front watching and deciding what to do. We were approaching rapids and a big rock. He said "Let's pass the rock on the left . . . go left . . .left . . .left . . . . .NO! GO RIGHT!" We were paddling fast so as to be able to steer and hit the rock dead on. The impact raised me up off the seat and I came back down hard on a thwart, making a black bruise clear across the top of both thighs in back.
