Yes, the contributor such as the spouse often dies early and then the surviving spouse gets benefits for many years thereafter. The system ends up paying out to someone in the family regardless of the death of the primary.

This system is flawed in all the wrong ways. The only way to save this thing is a massive influx of immigrants to continue the ponzi scheme. Ironically, though, immigrants are the main abusers of the system as it stands now.
