Hugh:
Ontario, yes. It's also not hard to guess that you are from Alberta.
Teaching the kids:
1. Think for themselves. I presume you mean the scientific method. Teach them to demand evidence, ask for proof, not blindly follow some infallible source. That rules out living in a country with a state religion where all children are taught to believe everything that the Pope, or the mullahs, or the rabbis or the Party says, without asking for evidence.
2. Learn Mandarin. I personally use this only for chatting with friends as I don't work in China. But it should be very useful for obtaining a job with a non-Chinese firm that is operating in China. Japanese companies that I know of all use English in talking with their Chinese collaborators. In such a case a Canadian company with people that know Mandarin(and the reading and the writing thereof) could compete very well with the Japanese companies.
3. Value of money. You mean saving, saving, saving and investing. Unfortunately a little knowledge of investing can sink one's finances. Investing successfully is hard. What do you do if you can't spare the time? Farm out the decision? To some mutual fund operator?

How about the golden rule? When they breathe their last breath they should be able to say, "Well, I tried to make the world a better place."
