AP's New Policy on Anonymous Sources

By Bob Kohn

The Associated Press's new policy on the use of anonymous sources, looks like a step in the right direction:

A source may remain anonymous only if the material he supplies is informational, not opinion or speculation. Further, material from an anonymous source may be used only with the appproval of a news manager and if the manager knows the identity of the anonymous source. The source must be identified as specifically as possible, not simply as "a source," and may not be cited elsewhere in the story as someone who declined comment. Finally, all anonymously sourced stories must carry a byline.
