You end up with the problem of infinite regression- where does the first black hole come from? Of course. If the idea that billions of black holes opening and closing create mini-universes, it seems [intuitively to me, of course] that the 'origin' question is simply one that cannot be answered. As each black hole would lead to billions of other black holes, the idea of a "mega" universe also seems unlikely under those circumstances. Our ideas of borders, where things "are" on one side but "are not" on the other, may simply be inadequate. The infinite blowing and bursting of billions of bubble universes may be the only way to make sense of things, no beginning and no end, though the laws of entropy suggest otherwise, the catch being that they may not apply at this scale. If this is the nature of the universe, then infinite results are possible and I see a big hole in the notion that the conditions for life are suficiently limited so as to make it unlikely that there are or were other life forms around. They may not exist in our particular bubble, but who's to say that they don't or didn't somewhere else. And why believe that carbon based life is necessarily the only way of life possible? The "bubble" universe idea is beautiful like string theory, but utterly impossible to prove. However, I also thought that the notion that Von Neumann probes could go through a black hole in order to replicate in the next bubble universe created by a black hole to be a bit nutty. That aspect of the book was pure science fiction. Entertaining, but not serious. Despite all our science and our so-called wisdom, to think that we have the slightest idea concerning the real nature of the universe is highly arrogant on our part. Until string theory came around quite recently, it was not mainstream thinking to believe that there were about 10 or 11 extra dimensions we cannot perceive. What other surprises are in store?
