It has been very cold here, so the birds all look "fluffed out" when they are at rest. They sit down and ruffle out their feathers so that they are more protected by the air trapped between the feathers. The Bluejays look about twice their normal size this week.

Owls are attracted to the activity around bird feeders -- not so much the birds as most of them are perched somewhere in among the spruce, cedar and pine trees around the house, but the rodents (mice and voles) do wander around on the snow looking for seed spilled from the feeders, so I expect the owl was watching for that kind of thing.

In our area, there are a lot of owls being seen -- more with each passing day. Several species that would usually stay a bit further north are being driven south due to the past few weeks of cold weather and heavier snow than usual up in the north. Last Thursday, a Great Grey owl flew over me while I was out in the field behind the barn. There have been many of them seen in this area and that's quite unusual. I'm hoping to see some Snowy owls around the farm over the winter. We had several that spent the winter of 83/84 hunting right around the barns here at the farm. Really wonderful to see them up very close as they are not particularly nervous and one can often walk up to within a few feet of them when they are perched somewhere.

I don't think I posted these here yet, but in the spirit of Christmas, some scenes from around the farm to put the thread in the appropriate holiday mood. Just click on any which you want to see larger, or the first one and then the "next" link on the screen.

Merry Christmas*, DARians!

(* and yes, even a rather pagan-ish Croc such as myself has no problem saying the "Christmas" word).
