The section on population under the poverty line is interesting. The US is ranked worse than places like Bulgaria and China.

I'd like to see how they measure poverty. I suspect that those labeled poor in the US are wealthier than those labeled poor in Bulgaria or China.

Poverty lines are silly things. There is nobody in NZ in poverty. If they are, it's their choice and bloody-mindedness.

Poverty as a word has been devalued to mean things like the "victim" can't afford Sky tv, a car, new clothes and a holiday overseas. Obese people are now alleged to be in poverty. In the good old days, such a thing was unheard of. People in poverty might line up for some soup and bit of bread. They were not wheeled up on a fork-lift ordering super-sizes.

I've been to quite a few places in the USA and it does NOT compare with the hutongs in Beijing. Since Beijing is considered wealthy, I suppose it's worse in the country. The hutongs looked like poverty to me. But still not as bad as the slums of India where poverty REALLY looked like poverty.

It's absurd for New Zealanders and Americans to talk of poverty. They should try working and behaving in a civilized way, canceling the smokes, booze and dope.
