Ray, Jay's "mindless" mantra where we are all subject to arbitrary forces beyond any mindful control is right in the sense that an individual can only see which way the wind is blowing and set sail accordingly. But, paradoxically, individuals have full control of the process by the laws of large numbers. The "leaders" are actually just floating along like so much flotsam and jetsam on the surface, wearing funny hats and posing for photographs.

It's true the leaders do make BIG decisions, but those decisions are vetted by the mob. Adolf didn't ravage Europe by himself. He just got in front of the mob and egged it on. He was pushed to the surface because that's what the mob collectively thought was a good idea.

Setting sail according to which way the wind is blowing is risky because humans don't really have momentum, unlike a giant river or hurricane. We can turn on a dime - overnight. The wind can go 180 degrees in minutes. Minds have no mass. No momentum.
