thanks -- it is exactly: the cost to have a shop replaced the BIOS chip is about buying a new PC. I leave that PC in the closet with its 1mg memory and 80 G HD and CDW configuration... some snow days I will take it out and tinkering with it for learning....

from a chatroom and will try later:
Question battery was taken out -- how do you reset/reprogram the BIOS for ASUS motherboard ???
Answer

The BIOS reverts to default values when the CMOS battery is removed. You will have to make changes in the BIOS manually. Start the computer and press the del key to enter the BIOS. Set the processor speed to the correct megahertz value, set Plug and Play OS to yes or on if using Windows operating system. When finished, go to the exit menu, save the changes, and exit.
