Hotline assists nepotism crackdown in China

Last Updated 23/12/2004, 04:36:40

A hotline set up for China's public to report nepotism and other illegal hiring practices has led to punishment for hundreds of officials.

The Xinhua news agency says China has punished 705 officials since the nationwide hotline was set up in March.

Xinhua did not detail the misdemeanours, but officials in China often hire their relatives, friends or people who bribe them.

The practice has led to widespread public discontent and inefficient local government.

The AFP news agency says China's Communist Party has set up numerous offices nationwide to deal with public calls, but is itself one of the biggest offenders.

It's unclear whether reports about party officials' violations would also be punished.
