S.F. AIRPORT -- To prevent a massive brain drain at airports nationwide, the Federal Aviation Administration released a plan Tuesday to replace thousands of air traffic controllers expected to retire within the next 10 years.

The FAA's plan includes hiring 12,500 controllers to fill vacancies throughout the nation. In the Bay Area, 40 to 50 employees will be assigned to work in airports in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Concord and Santa Rosa, according to Walt Smith, director of air traffic control at the San Francisco International Airport.

Another 40 to 50 will be hired to man the Oakland air route traffic control center in Fremont, Smith added. The administration plans to start recruiting now so that it can begin hiring in 2006, he said.
