So you are saying the folks that opt out of the public school system should get a tax break on their school taxes, while those that have no kids in the system (and in my case never had kids in the system) make up for their deficit? I'm saying "the system" isn't what is important. Education is. In thoery the parents who educate their own kid could pay the tax but also get money for educating a child but its simplier just to give them a tax break. What if they send their kids to "for profit" private schools, am I supposed to subsidize those schools as well? I don't see why that is any worse then subsidizing the current system. What if I build my own road for all my driving, can I "opt out" of the taxes for public roads? You would be unlikely to only use that road. Also by building that road you probably would not be providing a public service for which you could be compensated. More importantly you wouldn't be reducing the costs to the public for roads by any measurable amount. We've got a social contract, and I'll abide by that, with enthusiasm. It works, it's why we are a civilized society, it's how we got where we are (or were). We provide for each other, collectively. Society. And why does such provision have to be through a government program? Tim
