Ray, there's no step function from "low hanging fruit" to "omigod what are we going to do now?" There's a fungible continuum of energy options with a gently increasing price, which combined with a continuum of conservation measures will mean there's no problem in bringing more energy on stream as required.

People can stop making coffee and other frippery and start making photovoltaics. The world is furthest from broke in human history. Vast legions of people mess around on entertainment services from fingernail polishing to soothsaying and iridology. When the chips are down, they can all get a real job, producing energy.

The universe is made of energy. All that's required is to morph it into a form we want to use. The morphing processes aren't even very expensive. Coffee and reflexology will remain higher value services than energy production.

There is plenty of time to invest in basic energy alternatives.
