I'm pretty sure you must be in touch with the last five or so people anywhere who respect the power of the United States. From what I am reading, we are becoming universally reviled for the torture at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, our lack of concern for pitching in to do our share to stop global warming (and a big share it is), and even for choosing a president who the Europeans just do not get at all, and see as a warmonger.

We will not tolerate being pushed around until the party in power cannot take the political heat for the loss of our troops anymore. Then things will change, fast. I was watching the cable news a few minutes ago, and Pat Buchanan was talking about how we will reevaluate Iraq as Republicans who are up for election in 2006 start grumbling about how it's lessening their chances. We beat hasty retreats from Vietnam, Lebanon, and the Sudan for just this reason--too many troops lost, unwinnable conflicts, political concerns at home.
