From In the News (C-BGO) Bema Gold Corp

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that in a bid to grab a bigger share of the promising Cerro Casale deposit, Bema Gold has made a $283-million bid to swallow the shares of Arizona Star Resource that it does not already own. The Globe's Wendy Stueck writes that the move comes as Bema has been squabbling with dissident Arizona Star shareholder Albert Friedberg, a Toronto currency trader who spearheaded a campaign to oust Arizona's board of directors and replace them with his own nominees. That effort led to a compromise on Dec. 16, when Arizona Star elected a new six-person board that included four members from the dissident camp. Tuesday, Bema chief executive officer Clive Johnson said the bid for Arizona was not a response to the new board or to Mr. Friedberg's complaints, saying Bema -- which currently holds about 5 per cent of Arizona -- had been considering raising its stake in the smaller company for months. Mr. Friedberg continued to voice dissatisfaction however, describing Bema's offer as "woefully inadequate" and saying that Arizona would be hiring an investment bank to consider the offer. Mr. Friedberg controls about 30 per cent of Arizona.
