I was surprised he reluctantly admitted to things not going well - took him (and Bush) a long time to arrive at that realisation.

Reluctant? He is still singing that old sad song that only 3 provinces are in an uproar. Of course, he fails to point out that one of them includes Baghdad and that the others are almost as important. After all, Mosul is the third largest city in Iraq and Fallujah, a city of 300k, sits vacant with a great deal of it destroyed. Imagine what the residents of Fallujah think of Bush and ole Rummie.

I am still wondering what success in iraq would look like. I wish Bush would articulate that.

Their vision is that it will be working democracy like Israel.

Frankly, I don't think they are telling us how bad the conditions really are in Iraq. Tonite, there was a reporter who was embedded with American troops in Mosul. She ate in the mess hall that was attacked this week. She said the mess hall is on top of an exposed hill. The GI claim is that if you can make it to the mess hall, you deserve a Purple Heart.........that's how regularly they are fired upon on the way to lunch or dinner.

Of late, she said the major concern has been that the Iraqis training for the Iraqi security force may in fact be part of the insurgency so that they can attack us from within. Apparently, that's what happened in Mosul.

She also said that there is very little vetting of the Iraqi trainees because they can't afford to turn any away.......there are so few Iraqis who want to enlist. The insurgents have made it very clear that you will be a target if you join up with the Americans. They do that by leaving dead bodies lying around with messages scratched out in their skin.

Harris, another red voter and Bush supporter, posted an article tonite describing how this one Iraqi wished more Americans had been killed. Apparently, that refrain is becoming more common throughout Iraq.

Does a democratic govt in iraq with shiates in power, who are in bed with irani clerics be a win for us?

I think its become pretty clear that a Shia led gov't is unacceptable to the Sunnis.

If there are elections, that is the only viable and sustainable outcome I see. How would that be any better than saddam in power for our security?

I don't think it will be any better. I think the Sunnis are doing everything they can to provoke the Shia into a civil war.

From our standpoint, it seems like we need Allawi in power or kurds and Sunnis sharing power with Shiates majority. I dont see any chance of either of this happening and sustainable.

Kurds are Sunnis. If it wasn't for the fact that there are Kurds in Turkey, Syria, and Iran, a Sunni Kurd alliance would be a natural to balance out the Shia majority particularly since the Kurds have a lot of oil and border Turkey, a much more stable and economically sounder country. However, the Kurds want their own state.......they already have a name for it....Kurdestan. Consequently, the Sunnis are going after them as well.

Unfortunately, this war is not only undoing Iraq but its causing conditions to worsen here. We are in trouble....far worse trouble than the idiots in charge know.

Tonite, the NY Times was discussing the governor's race in WA state. They described it as a state where partisan politics was once carried out on a very polite level. No longer...........the hate for each side is palpable. And neither side is willing to accept defeat.

If the vote does not go their way tomorrow, the GOP is prepared to file in court even though they know the final vote count will be certified on Friday and there can be no more recounts. They will do it just to keep the Dem candidate from taking office. The uproar will be heard throughout the country.

This country is starting to unravel in the smallest of ways. As Bush keeps pushing his agenda........the latest is lifting the restriction on logging in our national forests and reversing other environmental laws, more and more people will be provoked. Many people are trying to go back to business as usual with little success. Each Bush insult is a reminder of what has gone down. At some point the unraveling will reach a critical mass and then it will be very hard to stop it without a lot of violence.
