How times has changed! Not too many centuries ago, they (the Mongols Khans gang of goons) swept south and west from Pacific to the Danube. What's happening today is so different and it's totally the very unique way of absorbtion and absorption without indigestion, except when one day someone would wake up from a dream and say "hey, what happened?" in realization of the new orientation around.

<To be absorbed by China..?>>

... to be economically dependent upon and politically subservient to its extraordinarily large neighbors.

Ramsey Su sees the world through a rose-coloured wallet and he's right. Surprisingly.

That's a strong Hong Kong mindset. People's hearts and minds follow their wallets. Or, more precisely, where they do their trading.

Taiwan does much the same. As does China.

The USA is Taiwan's extraordinarily large neighbour in that regard, and also politically associated through arms purchases [and politics - politics also follows trade]. So in many respects, it makes more sense for Taiwan to become the 51st state of the USA than to join China.

Plus, it's nicer to be free than to bow to Mecca or Hu Jintao or whoever is the current totalitarian boss.

Plus, there's an inherent law of large numbers meaning it's better to have millions of minds adding up to decisions rather than a single megalomaniac thinking he can figure it all out for everyone else.

When Taiwan is the 51st state, it would perhaps make sense for China to become the 52nd [on your law of large neighbours theorem].
