It's definitely the worst attempt at nation building. That's for sure. But the insurgents don't stand for democracy or for making the lives of the Iraqis better. The majority Shias know that the fastest way to get the Americans out is to hold elections as quickly as possible and to organize peacefully. They are doing that. This is why 15 out of the 18 Iraqi provinces are living in peace. The other 3 are being wracked by insurgents who refuse to accept the fact that the Shias will be in power, since they are the majority.

I agree we need to get out asap. I'd prefer we start the withdrawal as soon as elections are held in January. But even after we are out, you will see the insurgents continue to kill Iraqis. This will be the ultimate proof that these insurgents are fighting only for their own power and selfish reasons, not to provide a better life for Iraqis.

The picture in Friedman's article in the NYT shows Iraqis murdering Iraqis. Their actions have nothing to do with a noble cause.
