"For example, we are trying to encourage moderates in Iran, mainly by providing an alternative version of a Shi'ia dominated government in Iraq. "

Yes but we are also trying to influence the govt of iran. I dont think iranin mullahs expect a cc state to appear in iraq. There is persian/arab hostility to contend with as well. I think that they view a friendly iraq or at least friendly shiaastan as a buffer against the aggressive arabs and wahabists. And no one should make the mistake of thinking that iran is allied with al quaeda. It is purely tactical. Iran almost went to war against the taliban and as nutty as the mullahs seem sometimes they viewed the taliban as an abomidation against islam. Ask the Mullahs whether they would rather have the US or Al Quaeda on their borders if push came to shove and i believe they would choose us. Iran reminds me of china back at the beginning of Deng rule. They wanted economic success and were willing to liberalize ever so slowly and they were willing to work with the US. We suffered through Tienman square and forced abortions and all the rest but today China is a better place. It would be nice if in 10 years we could say the same of iran. To do so we need to play the same game of supporting liberalzation and the students but not letting that prevent us from dealing with the govt, especially the reform elements. Iran still is pre-deng i guess in that respect... mike
