Things aren't quite as smooth and easy as the US had planned. The Yukos affair is causing problems as well as Iran's nuclear ambitions.

US WARNS RUSSIA OVER YUKOS SALE

But what are they going to do? There were dire warnings against Iran too, warnings of economic sanctions. But these two countries have what the world is fighting for..... energy in the form of oil and gas. It's pretty hard to threaten boycotting a country when it works against your national interest.

I saw Rumsfeld on TV entertaining the troops in Mosul. He explained the reason for US war as just to bring democracy to the region, specifically not for the oil, but to prevent Iraq from gassing her own citizens and attacking her neighbours. (He must have forgotten to mention the US encouragement and role in supplying Saddam with weapons in the war against Iran.)

Both Iran and Russia are being wooed by China. The kettle is warming up slowly. Do I see a frog contentedly sitting in the middle of the pot?

Merry Christmas to all.
