Sam, I bought a Belkin UPS for just the sales tax after rebates. It came with a CD program allowing installation of a program that monitors power line and battery voltages and automatically shuts the computer down N minutes after power is lost. N is about 5 minutes in my case. That feature makes sense because I may not be at the computer when an outage occurs. Even without outage it will smooth the line voltage.

Batteries last a few years [my previous APC's lasted about 7 years].

The Belkin UPS makes no noise, so if the noise from your APC bothers you, get a Belkin amazon.com
