Regardless of whether our health system in Canada is better or worse than in the USA,we have universal coverage in Canada.There are more than 30 million people in the USA without any coverage at all.

Just look at what they eat, one should not be surprised at their lower life expectancy. As for my personal preference, I like China's system the best. No appointment needed for hospital visit. Anytime when you feel there is a need to, just go to the hospital in the morning to buy a registration number at half of the price of a smallest McDonald homburg - 5 Yuan - to see a regular doctor (for an experienced doctor, the cost is about a smallest homburg - 10 Yuan). There is no need to wait for days. For those who just have a minor cold or non-serious condition, many traditional herbal medicine stores have a free doctor to see anyone and will prescribe some herbal medicine patients can buy in the store. And if it is a cocktail needs to boil, one can pay a minimal fee to have them done in the store (before this service was free, only start to charge in recent years). And even if here in the US, for a regular HMO, one needs to wait anywhere 2-4 weeks to have a not-so-urgent problem checked. Although one can get a faster appointment if he exaggerates his condition, that is what I tend to do<g>

Hi Malcolm - Knowledge and outcomes in health care - Excellent article in the New Yorker about this subject about 2-3 weeks ago. I'll try to find a reference. Interesting that on this thread we know that People's Army Hospital No. xx in Beijing is pretty good, and No. yy is not so good.... Getting a good GP/ Family physician is very important. I had two great ones recently - both women. One spoke Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Spanish ! Really sharp. She left to set up her own practice. It is worthwhile to culivate friends who are in the medical business and get multiple opinions....
