The press, having heard of discontent with Rummy on the Hill, is determined to manufacture a Rummy scandal where none exists, to see if they can turn the discontent into a severe blow to the new Bush second term. I don't think it's fair to imply that there is a true Repulican-lead 'fire Rummy' movement on the Hill or in the Republican party.

I did not find that implication. I thought the story was about this:

<<The criticism of Rumsfeld "reflects years of growing concern and frustration about both his style and the substance of his policies," Thompson said.>>

I've read the story three times now. Please don't make me read it again. <gg>

The press, having heard of discontent with Rummy on the Hill, is determined to manufacture a Rummy scandal where none exists, to see if they can turn the discontent into a severe blow to the new Bush second term.

There may be some with a partisan objective but I think that most of them are just 1) tired or Rummy's schtick and 2) wanting to crack the arrogant certainty that no mistakes were made. That's my opinion.
