EPA approves DCX Smart car for U.S.: The first of a ton of good alt-energy items in Tuesday's AutoTech Daily and AutoBeat Daily: First, both publications noted that DaimlerChrysler A.G.'s 60-mpg Smart coupe has been certified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, according to Santa Rosa, Calif.-based ZAP, which has an exclusive licensing agreement to sell the vehicles in the U.S. ZAP intends to begin selling the two-seater cars next spring. It says it will set up a network of 150 dealers -- with service departments -- and aims to sell 15,000 cars annually. The price: $15,000 to $20,000. ZAP, which has marketed electric bikes and neighborhood electric vehicles for 10 years, is displaying the tiny two-seater this week at the San Francisco auto show. The vehicles are being modified in Europe to meet U.S. safety regulations by Smart-Automobile L.L.C., which is expected to provide a two-year warranty for the cars. DCX plans to launch its larger Smart Formore small utility vehicle in the U.S. in 2006. But the company says it won’t compete with ZAP by selling the two-passenger Smart, known overseas as the “Fortwo,” in the U.S. DCX launched the Smart brand in Europe six years ago. The coupe is powered by a 61-hp three-cylinder turbocharged engine mated with a six-speed manual-automatic transmission. Other features include stability control and a steel-reinforced “safety cell” construction.

SANTA ROSA, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bidding on the 60-MPG SMART car from Europe resumed after being halted for several hours Wednesday night and Thursday morning on online auction website eBay, said U.S. distributor ZAP (BULLETIN BOARD: ZAPZ) .

Bidding reopened on June 3 at 11:36:58 PM for the SMART car at ebay.com under keyword 'SMART CAR' or at the URL address: cgi.ebay.com .

Meanwhile, the June 3 issue of AutoWeek Magazine ( autoweek.com ) talks about the partnership between direct- importer SMART-Automobile LLC and ZAP, which is setting up a dealer network for the gasoline car along with its electric cars, motorbikes, ATVs and other vehicles. The article noted modifications made to the cars to meet U.S. crash standards, having been tested from the front, side, rear and roof. SMART Auto plans to sell 15,000 SMART "fortwo" models a year and ZAP says this is the first time a safety-certified SMART is available in the United States.

AutoWeek says that last year 122,300 SMART Cars were sold in 30 countries worldwide. While ZAP has not initiated sales for the SMART car yet, news of the car coming to the U.S. has attracted many who have been waiting to buy them, some of them for years. Since last week, ZAP says 887 people have visited its website at zapworld.com to pick their favorite colors and put their name on a waiting list for sales information.

SMART-Automobiles LLC is an independent, privately-held company that oversees the direct importation and modification of automobiles to meet U.S. standards.

First SMART Car in U.S. Available to Buy on eBay from ZAP
Friday December 3, 12:46 pm ET

SANTA ROSA, Calif., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced automotive technology pioneer ZAP (OTC Bulletin Board: ZAPZ - News) is auctioning off the most fuel-efficient car in the U.S. on eBay, the new 60-MPG SMART Car.

This will be the first federally compliant SMARTCAR available to U.S. consumers. ZAP is organizing U.S. marketing and distribution for the new two-passenger car that has created worldwide interest since its European release in 1998. To bid on the SMART Car Americanized by ZAP®, visit ebay.com and use the keyword 'SMART CAR' to bid on the car. With over 500,000 SMART cars sold outside the U.S. and gas prices at record highs in 2004, the popularity of the economical, internal-combustion car is now generating consumer interest in the States. ZAP unveiled the SMART Car to U.S. consumers last week at the San Francisco International Auto Show, announcing that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued a Letter of Conformity for the 60-MPG car. The regulatory approval clears the way for ZAP to begin U.S. sales for the car.

News of the car coming to the U.S. has attracted many U.S. consumers who have been waiting to buy them, some of them for years. At the same time, dealers across the country are lining up for the chance to sell the cars. The SMART cars will be distributed in the U.S. through selected ZAP auto dealers, specializing in advanced technology vehicles, including more fuel-efficient automobiles powered by gasoline, electric, hydrogen fuel cell as well as other fuels.

Reports indicate that SMART cars can achieve up to 60 miles per gallon in fuel economy, rivaling even hybrid gas-electric cars, making it one of the most fuel-efficient internal combustion automobiles in the world.
