what is different with regards to xD picture card compared to SNDK products - just different "brand" ?

The XD-Picture Card has a smaller physical size and costs significantly more per megabyte than SanDisk's SD flash memory cards. The smaller physical size allows manufacturers to build smaller cameras.

More anecdotal...

My wife bought me my first digital camera (trying to drag a medium format emulsion guy kicking and screaming into modern photography). She also bought a Lexar (gasp!) 256 XD card. The salesman talked her into it, and from experience I know it's not easy to talk her into an add-on sale.

On a related subject, sold calls against most of my SNDK position on Thursday...
