For almost all the hundreds of Plains and Western Indian tribes, Lewis & Clark were the first white men they had ever seen. L&C came as explorers, not conquerors, and brought gifts. Yet they found very few "peaceful" tribes and had to be on constant guard against theft or massacre whenever they met Indians. The few peaceful tribes they met were themselves constantly on guard or on the move to avoid the savage, warrior tribes who would kill them or make slaves of them.

The white man eventually committed misdeeds against the Indian, but to portray Indian tribes as peaceful, agrarian societies which were corrupted by the white man is simply re-inventing history and turning it on its head.
