From reading reports about the tsunamis, my impression is that many just had no clue that when water is suddenly sucked away from the seashore, that's a bad sign, and you need to get out of there, ASAP.

I have no idea why I know that, except that I've had nightmares about tsunamis since I was a kid. Maybe something I saw on TV or in a magazine a long, long time ago.

I've been looking at the USGS earthquake website -- looks like lots of activity in the region lately, but they're also worried about California. Californians, of course, dismiss this. At least, I assume they must, they're still there. Geologists have been predicting "the big one" for as long as I can remember.

There was even an earthquake in the Cayman Islands recently!

Re early warning from the earthquake: Message 20888557

Even that early, CNN had some of the reports. The situation does indeed make one wonder why so many people didn't move to higher ground.

After the earthquake, how quickly did the tsunami arrive at all the various countries and shores?

You won't get a mass of people, not to mention the relevant officials to all act together and appropriately without prior training. If you or I were to jump up this minute and begin phoning the police chief and the governor with a dire warning, would they act without having official confirmation? How would they know what to do, unless they had already done evacuation planning?
