The fact that establishment figures are now suggesting such drastic action shows how explosive the imbalances have become.

As far as debt repudiation goes there is ample precedent. Richard Nixon in 1971 unilaterally repudiated the long standing US commitment to redeem foreign debts in gold on demand.
