Except that the ACLU is not opposing open debate. Rather, it is concerned that *"intelligent design is a more secular form of creationism, a Biblical-based view that credits the origin of species to God, and may violate the constitutional amendment that bars establishment of religion." Exactly right, which is why I mentioned that the Christmas Wars were just a warmup for the Creationism Wars. I'd love to see a survey asking the question, "if the ACLU is for something, does that mean that you will automatically and reflexively oppose it just because you hate the ACLU?" But that's kinda unfair. People who want to see creationism taught in public schools are, for the most part, merely absymally ignorant. Take, for example, Phyllis Schlafley. She is apparently sincere in believing that if Darwin made a mistake in a hypothesis about swimming bears, that means that evolution is a hoax. For her, the Bible is a magic book, much as the Muslims think the Koran is a magic book, dictated by God in heaven and thus immune to human fallibility. If the Bible says God created the world in 6 days, that means 6 24 hour days. And all life on earth was created, as is, in the same instant. A substantial percentage of Americans agree with her. Darwin, who did not write a magic book, cannot compete. It's easy to laugh at people who are willing to believe that dinosaurs walked with man, but they take themselves very seriously, and they control many of the so-called "red states," and they think Bush winning puts them in control. They think it's time to take back the country from Godless atheism and communism, which includes people who teach evolution.
