The interesting thing about whales is that they DID evolve from land mammals. Not bears, though. They evolved from an extinct land mammal most closely related to the Artiodactyla: sheep, cattle, deer, hippos, pigs.

I haven't read Darwin talking about bears swimming, but of course the theory that animals developed desireable characteristics has been discarded for the theory that animals developed new characteristics randomly and kept the ones that were useful because that gave them a survival advantage, while the ones who did not have that mutation were at a relative disadvantage.

Origin of the Species was published in 1859. It's bound to have contained some mistakes.

What Schlafly and her ilk want to do, which is intellectually dishonest in the extreme, is reject evolution completely because Darwin made some mistakes, and of course, God, who wrote the Bible, never made any mistakes. At least, that's their story and they're sticking with it.
