I agree completely.

But the mo-mo crowd can't see your stops. Only MMs and specialists can, to the best of my knowledge. Of course, they will often jump in with the mo-mo crowd.

Sometimes with particular stocks that I know the MMs are muscling around and it trades towards my stop, I will cancel the stop if I can watch it. Then, I just use a mental stop, and if it hits my mental stop and I see no signs of reversal, I'll just sell with a market order.

Thanks for the info re trailing stops. Personally, I like to adjust my stops according to intraday support levels, rather than a fixed percentage. But often I can't devote that much time to it, so an automatic trailing stop would be very useful to me. I use Scottrade also, so that is very good news for me.
