re: An independent Kurdistan would last a few weeks at the most.

Unless we decided to fight that war as well.

"Iraqi Kurds petition UN for independence poll"

And if it gets any further, look for Turkish troops to start lining up on the border. Just like they did when the Iraqi Kurds were making independence noises when the US first invaded. An independent Kurdistan would last a few weeks at the most.

Fighting the Kurdish rebels has been a drain on the Turkish economy. In addition, the fight with the Kurdish insurgency over the past 20 years has led to numerous human rights violations. That, in turn, has hurt Turkey's application for admission into the EU. The EU would like to see some resolution of Turkey's Kurd problem prior to granting full membership. After all, Turkey has killed as many Kurds as Saddam did.

In light of the above, I don't think Kurdish independence is such a non starter.

Nonsense. A Turkish military incursion into Iraq would be disasterous for Turkey. They may mount their military on the border to look provocative, but there is no way they would attack. What would their endgame be, annexation of Iraqi Kurdistan? That's preposterous.
