Fast forward 100 years from now, I wonder what the solution will be?

Probably the same combination of mechanical/electronic/mail, no doubt, and toss the internet in there for good measure, for better or worse.

From the math side, any counting method will have a margin of error no matter how microscopic, so whenever there's an uber-close election (like that snafu in the state of Washington, what a mess that is) it all comes down to scrutinizing the votes of people who can't navigate a pencil, poke a chad, etc.

If an election is THAT close then it really doesn't matter, statistically speaking, which of the candidates is put in office, it is a tie... but try telling that to people, LOL.

No, you're right, there has to be a more definitive counting process.

(Then, there's the whole issue of who is truly registered to vote to begin with, were any votes purchased, were any homeless people bought out, was blind Grandpa's vote changed by his daughter before it was mailed in, etc etc... another can of worms.)

Some people want to abolish the electoral college, too.

God forbid we have a repeat of 2000 anytime soon.

Well, it all keeps these threads going, that's the silver lining. wink
