No, I wouldn't.

Parties have no membership criteria. Anyone can claim to be a Republican or a Democrat and that's that. But I think that parties should and do have certain principles or groups or issues that they stand for. The Republicans make it clear that they're pro-life and the Democrats make it clear that they're pro-choice. Not that they kick out others, but they stand for what they stand for and they don't embrace others.

I firmly believe that extremism is destructive. The left can rail until it's hoarse about the right wing-nuts and the converse. But only fellow believers can tell their own when they've crossed the line and make a difference. <I point out excesses here all the time--it's my job <g>--and rarely make a dent because I'm not considered part of the club.) I think that both parties have an obligation to rein in their own nutters or to disown them. Nothing wrong with grabbing them by the scruff of the neck and telling them that that just won't do.

The Republicans drummed out the Birchers way back when, as I recall, or at least pushed them underground.
