Have you known many scientists that have done this? I don't. Actually, most are conventional and skeptical things that don't upset the status quo. However, all the ones who want to make a name need to find that little known, or overlooked tidbit from which to build their thesis. And if it rocks the scientific community, they get a Nobel Prize. At a certain level, nobody gets recognized for believing the same thing everyone else does. It's the ability to prove the consensus is wrong that gets the award.
