<the resort on a hill is obviously the way to go. Just sit around the pool and watch the ocean off in the distance. If you must visit the beach, head for high ground if there's a major quake in your part of the world.

How do you get timely notification of a major quake?

This disaster is perhaps a warning which will save more than have died as around the world, people will be mindful that living at sea level is dangerous.

You have explained how people should handle the sea. Live higher up [I guess about 50 metres at least, to avoid perhaps 90% of waves and preferably with a bunker for hiding in until the wave passes and recedes] and visit the beach with retreat available on short notice.

Timely notification would mean staying at a hotel or living in a town with a siesmograph linked to a QUALCOMM MediaFLO service on your phragmented photon cyberphone so that broadcast warnings of any serious earthquake or bolide strike would give good warning to run for it.

As people can now see, CDMA could have saved umpty thousand lives. It's amazing how useful that wondrous CDMA service is.
