One of the sailors onboard committed suicide

What are you "onboard," Michael? I thought you were working as a civilian in Italy.

So sorry to hear that Michael.

Allot of people don't realize that life on a boat is the same as life in any small community, and the people that live there are just like any member of any shore side community. The same problems exist.....as well as the same privileges, concerns, desires and the necessary requirements to deal with those needs. We've all probably been touched by suicide, and in most incidences the why is never revealed. Some members of that community make devastating choices. If your shipmates could turn back time, I doubt the outcome would change. Doesn't make it any easier, but I empathise with you and your shipmate's grief and confusion.
