Hello Malcolm, The Chairman was the inevitable product of his age. It was either him or Chiang, and the more capable guy got to be top dog. It really is as simple as all that, and any less ruthless person would not have gotten to be top dog, because the conditions are such that would not be possible.

Apparently, you do not know much about Chinese history. China has had a Centralized system ever since Qin ShiHuang Di 200BC or so. What dictatorship? That is Western terminology! And hey, that is the system works in China for thousands of years. Too bad you guys don't like it, but does it matter? not a bit! Chinese themselves like it, and that is good enough, more than enough.
