6:11AM TSMC: ramping 90nm production, yield "very competitive" (TSM) by Madeleine Acey
LONDON (CBS.MW) -- Semiconductor manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) said it has been ramping-up production of chips that use cutting-edge 90 nanometer technology. TSMC said it has reached "very competitive" yields for the chips on 300mm wafers with fewer defects and better process control. The company said fourth quarter production levels of 300mm wafers using the 90nm technology reached several thousand per month. It did not spell out the yield of working chips per wafer but said it would ramp to higher wafer volumes in 2005. TSMC said it would have designs for 40 single-product wafers and 30 mixed-product wafers completed by the end of 2004, with "close to ten" in production.
