Hi ild > what are your current thoughts about the Rand's strength? Export oriented parts of RSA economy must be in real trouble.

That's putting it mildly.

allafrica.com

>>ALMOST 40% of manufacturers have had to permanently shut down their export capacity over the past two years, losing the fight to remain competitive in the face of the rand's phenomenal strengthening against the dollar .<<

In fact, I don't think any gold mine is showing a profit.

But, like the US, the less SA exports the higher is the "growth".

morganstanley.com

>>On the back of today’s release of new National Accounts data, we are raising the real GDP growth estimate for this year to 3.8%, from 2.8%. Statistics South Africa revised up 2003 growth to 2.8%, from 1.9% previously. While 2001 and 2002 remained unchanged at 2.7% and 3.6%, respectively, growth in the year 2000, which is now the base year for the new series, was revised up to 4.2% (from 3.5%).<<

On this basis I imagine, next year, 60% of export oriented industries will have closed and "growth" will approximate that of China!
