You had me going there for a moment, John. I now see it's Lee R. Raymond, Chairman, Exxon Mobil Corporation that you're referring to, and not Raymond Duray ;)

Here's the url to the speech you quoted (although, this one is dated May 16, 2001 and your message cites a date of May 4<?>):

Science and Technology: Today's Foundation; Tomorrow's Path

Remarks by Lee R. Raymond
Chairman, Exxon Mobil Corporation
May 16, 2001

John,

That BS reply was utterly non-responsive.

#1: You provided no verifying URL. This is the first sign of a scoundrel on the Internet.

#2: You made no distinction whatsoever as to what this purported research was intended to produce. Was is geophysical science designed to better categorize the results of seismic testing for petroleum bearing strata, or was it calibration of chemical deposition equipment for amorphous polysilicone photovoltaic membranes? Who can tell? Not me, and not anyone else reading what you've provided.

#3: You provide absolutely nothing in the way of describing what these 1,600 Ph.D's are up to. From the trivial information you've provided, I would rightly conclude that most of these Ph.Ds are organic chemists, geophysicists and seismologists.

But there is absolute no way I could prove it. For all I know, from what you've provided, they could all be theologians. In fact, apparently your belief in the oil industry is more faith based than fact enhanced.
