Few are counting on Social Security check
freep.com

BY SUSAN TOMPOR, FREE PRESS COLUMNIST

Robert Mann is a young boomer who figures the best way to plan his retirement is to forget about Social Security (news - web sites).

"My plan is to presume I'm getting zero. And then anything I do get from it is a benefit and a bonus," said Mann, a 43-year-old who lives in Grosse Pointe Woods and would like to retire from Ford Motor Co. before 60.

Plenty of boomers -- especially those born in the 1960s -- fear Social Security checks will stop with their parents.

They're hearing lots of talk.

Talk of revamping the system and allowing some people, if they'd like, to put a part of their payroll taxes into personal accounts.

"...King Arthur was for peace, but if war came, he was for total war".

Powell obviously studied King Arthur... or Clausewitz did.

So we can't leave. I think Bush was successful in bringing the battle to Al Qaida, but he may have also been successful in getting us pinned down in Iraq.

Condi Rice will be key. Does she have a foreign policy view of her own?

If her views are different than those held by people at DOD, DOD will not be able to marginalize her as they did Colin Powell.

Nevertheless, as Secretary of State, she now has a considerable power base. Let us hope she can make a difference.

The fate of civilization is now in the hands of a young black woman.
