Sig,

I just can't imagine it would be all that easy to hit the cockpit of a plane at 8000' with just a kids laser.

Lasers come in various forms, but all pointers and kids toy lasers are LED lasers and could not possibly reach 8,000' let alone track anything. Laser pointers used with hand held weapons are also unlikely to reach that distance.

Real weapon lasers are typically outside of the visible light spectrum (similar to the lasers used in high speed communications). Green or red visible lasers hitting a cockpit at 8,000 to 10,000 feet would most likely be associated with a light show.

If I were in the FBI, I would begin my investigation looking at light show lasers...
