I agree that there was a huge right-wing attempt to smear Bill Clinton, Suma. On the other hand, I think even Clinton has acknowledged that his sexual compulsions and defending himself consumed most of his energy, and he believes he could have been a much more effective president than he was.

Personally, my feeling is that the lengths he, his advisors, and his attorneys went to to discredit and attempt to destroy women who had accused him of sexual wrongdoing, and to defend him when he was clearly wrong and lying about it, compromised a lot of credibility for the Democrats and caused them to lose the moral high ground.

It is hard not to find Clinton appealing in some way, because he is really charismatic, but his misconduct in itself, without even considering some of the issues Gore brought to the campaign, was enough in a very, very tight election to tip it towards Bush, even though I realize Gore won the popular vote in 2000. I think he would have won definitively without Clinton's baggage, and we wouldn't have the horrors George Bush has created for America in the world.

Sorry, Suma, I didn't address the part of your post about Clarence Thomas. I found those hearings just totally appalling, with Republican senators in particular acting like, dare I say it, sexist pigs. I hope that was the end of such despicable behavior--it certainly got a lot of negative press. It's really hard to imagine Clarence Thomas is going to be the new Chief Justice. I cannot even get my mind around the notion. I think most women knew that Anita Hill was telling the truth. Well, maybe except conservative Republican women. I don't remember any of them coming forward at the time. I still see quite a few pro-Anita Hill bumper stickers, although I realize that is scant compensation for the unfolding nightmare we might have with a conservative Supreme Court.

I hope your new year is full of happiness, Suma.
