If I'm not mistaken he went back home to sleep it off. I do believe thats the generally accepted view. Shall we poll it here on SI? Kennedy did admit he was drinking....given his history with booze it would seem to be a connect the dots kind of thing But lets take a poll shall we?

Do you have evidence that he was blasted? Guess we'll never know for sure, because he left the scene and delayed reporting the accident for hours. I'd say the presumption would be he delayed to give himself time to recover from the martini's he'd been drinking. The story about repeatedly diving down to try to get her out is Teddy's self-serving story, and was not witnessed by anyone but him and the fish (and the soon-to-be-dead Mary Jo Kopechne).
